Abstract

1,274,569. Foam core laminates. UNICOR Inc. 26 Nov., 1970, No. 56837/70. Heading B5N. A laminate comprises a plurality of transversely spaced longitudinally parallel elongated foam cores 20, e.g. of closed cell polyurethane foam, a primary base layer of flexible fabric 22 extending continuously along common lower base sides of the foam cores, a primary covering layer of a flexible fabric 24 extending continuously upwardly over and downwardly transversely between the foam cores, a row or stitching 26 between the primary base and covering layers at the transverse extremities of each foam core and a cured resin, e.g. a polyester, epoxy or phenolic resin, impregnating and covering the fabric layers and stitching to rigidity the assembly. A sandwich construction may be produced from two such laminates, one of which is inverted and interengaged downwardly fully with the other. The fabrics may be made from animal, vegetable or synthetic fibres although glass fibre fabrics are preferred. Secondary covering layers 32 may be provided and outer facing layers of coloured resin. The foam cores may be of cross-section other than an isosceles triangle, e.g. a right-angled triangle, rectangular or isosceles trapezoidal. The laminates may be moulded to any desired shape, e.g. a boat hull.
