Abstract

1501085 Laminates UNITEX Ltd 7 Feb 1975 [7 Feb 1974] 05716/74 Heading B5N A foam sandwich construction is produced by applying to the polished surface of a curved female mould a gel coat, laying glass cloth together with resin on to the gel coat to form a glass fibre reinforced plastics outer skin, laying on to the wet resin semi-rigid expanded polyurethane foam and laying on to the foam a further layer of glass cloth and resin to form, after curing, a glass fibre reinforced plastics inner skin, the semi-rigid expanded polyurethane foam being in the form of a board which contains parallel grooves cut almost through the board and the board being not more than 1À75 inches thick and the grooves being not more than 2À5 inches apart. The gel coat is one which enables subsequent separation of the sandwich construction from the mould. The glass cloth is (a) a chopped strand mat of glass fibres, (b) a woven roving of glass fibres, (c) a woven cloth of glass fibres or (d) a combination of (a) and (b). The polyurethane foam board may be 4 ft. by 2 ft. by not more than 1À75 inches and the grooves may be machined down into the board until only about # inch of foam remains to hold the strips defined by the grooves together.
