Abstract

[Also in Group XXXIII] A method of producing a reinforced sandwich structure comprises applying a thick coating of a film-forming synthetic resin and hardener to a mould or former the surface of which is treated to prevent sticking of the film or skin to the former, then applying a woven fibre fabric to the coated former and applying to the surface of the skin so formed, evenly over the entire surface, a layer of a hardenable synthetic resin adhesive, pressing the cellular core material, cut into tiles of suitable size and shape, on to the layer of adhesive so that the adjacent edges of the tiles are in close contact, the said edges being coated with the adhesive and the tiles being laid so that the joints between parallel rows of tiles are in alignment and finally attaching a skin to the exposed surface of the core with the same or a compatible synthetic adhesive. Suitable skin material is glass fibre reinforced epoxide resin sheet. The resin may be epichlorhydrin bis-phenol condensation product. The core material is foamed or expanded plastic. There may be interposed between the core and the skin a synthetic foam layer consisting of a synthetic resin adhesive with a micro-balloon filler consisting of phenolic resin substances. The skin may be formed in situ by applying a thick coating of film-forming synthetic resin and hardener to a mould, then applying a glass fibre woven fabric to the coated former and applying pressure to force the resin composition between the fibres of the fabric. In making a self-buoyant dinghy as shown (Figs. 1 and 3), the inside of mould 1 is coated with epoxy resin moulding mix 2, glass fibre cloth 3 is laid thereon, and on top of this an epoxy resin cement mix. The core tiles, cut and shaped from cellular polyvinyl chloride board are laid on and pressed into the resin cement. The cement is well brushed into the tile edges whereby a strong membrane 6 is formed between the inner and outer skin. A layer of synthetic foam is then laid on the tiles and the second skin 5 is formed thereon in the same manner as skin 3.
