Abstract
712,345. Pneumatic tyres. WILKES, L., and WILKES, W. L. Jan. 16, 1953 [Jan 19, 1952], No. 1589/52. Class 144(2) To maintain inflation pressure in a pneumatic vehicle type while the vehicle is in operation a band 2 comprising a hollow tube of rubber or like material mounted on a stiffening base 1 and open at one end 8 is removably secured around the outer periphery of the tyre with its closed end connected to the tyre inflation valve so that on rolling of the tyre, air is trapped in the tube and pumped into the tyre by the continual flattening of the tube where it contacts the ground. As shown the stiffening base is of channel-section, the flanges 4 of which fit over the sides of the tyre tread, to prevent axial displacement of the band, the band being secured to the tyre by straps 5. The closed end of the tube may taper into a small bore tube 6 terminating in a connector 7 for connecting with the tyre inflation valve and having a safety valve to prevent over inflation. To assist in retaining the band in position on the tyre the band may be made so as to have a tendency to coil up on itself.
