Abstract
814,371. Inflating pneumatic tyres. MORRISON, A. W. May 8, 1956, No. 14272/56. Class 144 (2). A pneumatic tyre 7 mounted on a rim 6a of a wheel is maintained at the desired inflation pressure by means of a reservoir 5 which contains air at a higher pressure than the said inflation pressure, and which forms part of, or is carried by, the wheel 6, the reservoir communicating with the tyre via a reducing valve 9 which permits flow of air into the tyre on a fall in the inflation pressure. Fig. 2 shows the reservoir 5 as an annular integral part of the wheel 6 with the outer periphery of the reservoir forming a well-based rim 6a, a non-return valve 8 being provided for charging the reservoir 5 with air. The reducing valve 9 may be accessible from outside the reservoir for relieving the pressure in the tyre as shown in Fig. 4, the valve serving also for charging the reservoir, via an orifice 9a and being connected by a conduit to the tyre. Fig. 9 shows the reservoir as a separate annulus detachably carried in a recess 20 in the wheel disc periphery.
