Classes 122(1) and 122(2) [Also in Group XXVIII] Valves controlling access of vaporized liquid oxygen to the cylinder space above the working piston 2 of a reciprocating pump for liquid oxygen (see Group XXVIII) comprises a small conical valve 7 urged by a spring 16 against a seating 13 which itself acts as a valve against a seating 15 in the cylinder head 6, and on energizing a solenoid 12 the valve 7 is unseated to allow a restricted oxygen gas flow through an orifice 20 whereon the resulting pressure build-up lifts the valve 13 to allow free flow to the cylinder space. Similar values 8, 21 provide for exhaust on energizing a second solenoid 12. In a modification the large component of the exhaust valve comprises a quick acting ball valve unseated by a push rod secured to a piston actuated by the restricted fluid flow through the conical valve, and timing of the solenoids by which the vapour inlet and exhaust valves are actuated is effected by arms projecting from a driven shaft contacting brushes. The piston 2, which is of metal, may be prevented from seizing in the cylinder due to dust by lining the piston or the cylinder with a plastic material comprising polymonochlorotrifluoro-ethylene in which the dust becomes embedded. The piston may be constructed entirely of such material.
