Abstract

535,718. Pneumatic single-stroke apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 16, 1939, No. 30180. Convention date, Nov. 18, 1938. [Class 8(ii)] [Also in Group XXIX] In apparatus comprising a piston operated through a body of liquid by compressed gas, liquid that leaks past the piston is trapped in a reservoir provided with a check-valve, and is periodically forced back into the liquid-chamber. The apparatus shown in the Figure comprises, as described in Specification 514,005, [Group XXXVII], a piston 10, an oil-chamber 20, and valves 14, 15, 22 operated by coils 11, 12. On energization of the coils, compressed air is admitted to the chamber, oil is forced out, and the piston is raised, coil 12 being then de-energized to re-close the valve 22 and thereby maintain the piston in raised position. On de-energization and re-energization of the coils 11, 12, compressed air is applied to the tops of the piston-chamber, and the piston is depressed. For trapping oil that leaks through the packing 28 into the space 29, the apparatus is now provided with a passage 30 leading through a ball-valve 31 to an inclined reservoir 32 which communicates through pipes 33, 34 with the chamber 20. When the trapped oil covers the end of the pipe 33, air bubbles through the oil and builds up pressure in the reservoir, and when pressure is released from the chamber 20 to depress the piston, oil is forced out of the reservoir and returned to the chamber. Oil sprayed off the ball-valve 31 during closing thereof passes through an opening 36, is caught by a filter 35, and flows back through the ball-valve to the reservoir. The minute quantity of oil that passes the filter, seeps through a threaded connection 38, and returns to the reservoir through a groove 39 and holes 40.
