Abstract
815,946. Reciprocating pumps. WORTHINGTON CORPORATION. April 25, 1957 No. 13176/57. Class 102(1). [Also in Group XXIX] A clutch between an engine and a compressor driven thereby is hydraulically actuated, the pressure fluid being obtained from a manually operated pump having an outlet passage 22 housing a spring-loaded ball-valve 23. Around the pump is a reservoir 17 from which leads a passage 25 that is connected to passage 22 under the control of another spring-loaded ball valve 26 ; a bypass 28 inter-connects passages 25, 22. In the bypass 28 is a ball valve 31 movable onto its seat by screwing a stem 30 into its housing 29 whilst on the upper part of the stem is a piston 34 having a recess 35 of sufficient size to accommodate an operating knob 32 on the valve stem; the piston is urged to the position shown by a spring 37. To engage the clutch the knob 32 is rotated to seat the valve 31 and the engine is started; when the engine lubricating oil pressure has attained a given value it passes to a conduit 39 and moves the piston 34 against the spring 37 until the knob 32 is completely within the recess 35 and operation of the valve 31 is thus prevented. Upon actuation of the pump the clutch is engaged and it cannot then be disengaged until the engine is stopped and the air pressure drops to enable the spring 37 to move the piston 34 and uncover the knob 32.
