Class 135 In a plug valve 5 of the kind which is lifted from its seat before rotation to the open position and is then lowered again, direct communication between the inlet and outlet passages 2, 3 is provided by the initial lifting movement and means is also provided to ensure that the plug is lifted before it can be rotated. To lift the plug, a screw 19 carrying the valve stem 15 is rotated by a handle 20 so that it rises in the yoke 11 and carries the stem and plug with it. During this movement of the stem, a pin 23 projecting therefrom rides clear of a groove in an abutment 13 projecting from a side of the yoke 11, and the stem and plug can then be rotated by a handle 21 carried by the stem so that the valve will open and a further pin 22 on the stem will be brought into coincidence with the groove in abutment 13. If the handle 20 is now rotated in the opposite direction, the plug will be lowered on to its seating.
