710,073. Valves and valve-gear; cylinders. BUTTERWORTH A. J. Dec. 6, 1950 [Sept. 6, 1949], No. 23018/49. Classes 7(2) and 7(6) An intake valve 5, disposed at the end of an intake passage 10 which has no sharp bends and is preferably straight, is mounted to swing about an axis 6 transverse of the cylinder axis so that the angle which the axis of the valve head makes with the cylinder axis diminishes as the valve opens until the valve axis is parallel, or nearly parallel, with the cylinder axis, the valve head in this position lying wholly or for the most part to one side of the axis 13 of the intake passage. The valve head 5 is carried by a rocker arm 4 projecting through a slot 11 and attached to a shaft 6 journalled in bearings formed partly in the intake passage wall and partly in a detachable cap 7, an arm 8 on the projecting end of the shaft being actuated by a push-rod 9. The valve head 5 may be screwed to the arm 4 or attached thereto so that it is free to rotate, and the end of the passage 10 is widened slighly to merge smoothly into the valve seat.
