Abstract

709,617. Valves. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Oct. 17, 1952 [Oct. 19, 1951], No. 26096/52. Class 135 A pressure reducing valve for maintaining a desired pressure differential between the high and low temperature evaporators of a refrigerating system, comprises a casing 8 having a partition member 11 having an axial bore 13 loosely mounting a valve pin 16 to permit equalization of pressure on opposite sides of the member. The member has transverse slots 14, 22 intersecting the bore, and a recess 12 for a weighted plunger 17 engagable with lost motion with the pin 16. When the pressure in the high temperature evaporator connected at 9 exceeds that in the low temperature evaporator connected at 10 sufficiently to overcome the weight of the plunger, the pin 16 rises. Refrigerant then flows through the slot 14 to act on the upper side of the plunger to resist its upward movement and so delay the full opening of the valve. Downward movement of the plunger is delayed by the slow leakage of refrigerant trapped in the recess 12 past the leaky pin 16 and through the slot 22.
