Abstract
728,628. Refrigerating. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. April 23, 1953 [May 9, 1952], No. 11161./53. Class 29. [Also in Group XXIX] An expansion valve for refrigeration systems comprises a valve closure member 16 adjustably loaded by a spring 34 by which it is urged towards a seat 18 upon increase of pressure in the evaporator 123 communicated by a passage 47 to a spring-loaded diaphragm 48 which is connected by a pin 40 to the valve member, and a diaphragm 133 whose upper face is subject to the pressure of a volatile fluid so as to be responsive to the temperature at the outlet of the evaporator 'and which has a lost-motion connection 149, 151 with the diaphragm 48. The arrangement is such that the valve member is normally controlled solely by the pressure responsive diaphragm 48 but in the event of excessively low temperature at the outlet of the evaporator due to the presence of liquid refrigerant, the diaphragm 133 rises under the effect of a spring 153 and takes up the lost motion to increase the throttling afforded by the valve. An adjustable spring 155 acts on the upper side of the diaphragm 133, and the space between the diaphragms may be either evacuated or connected to a resilient bellows 137 outside the chamber so that the pressure in the latter varies with atmospheric pressure.
