Abstract

675,942. Refrigerating. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 2, 1951 [Jan. 6, 1950], No. 161/51. Class 29 In a system having high and low temperature evaporators 8, 2, the low temperature evaporator 2 is supplied with refrigerant from a condenser 4 and has a header 3 containing liquid refrigerant connected below the liquid level 9 by a pipe 10 with the higher temperature evaporator 8 through a temperature - controlled valve 12. The header is connected above the liquid level with the suction pipe 7 of the compressor 5 and with the vapour pipe 11 of the high temperature evaporator. A thermostat 15 on the evaporator 8 controls the solenoid valve 12 through a bellows 14 and contacts 21. The compressor unit 5 is controlled by a thermostat 27 on the header 3, through a bellows 26 and contacts 24. The thermostat 27 is situated above the liquid level 9 in the header so as to respond quickly when the high temperature evaporator requires refrigeration. The low temperature evaporator 2 is made of small diameter tubing while the high temperature evaporator 8 has large tubing to minimize the pressure drop through it. The suction pipe 7 may be joined to the pipe 11 through the header 3 and have one or more holes therein within the header to withdraw vapour from the header, or the open ends of the pipes 7, 11 may be positioned within the header in line with and in proximity to each other.
