Abstract
As a preliminary treatment to processes such as for example, oxidation processes, or plating chemically a metal surface consisting at least mainly of aluminium is treated to remove the surface film of oxide, by etching in an aqueous etchant of high total acidity containing both free chlorine ions and un-ionized but ionizable chlorine and a substance providing hydroxy groups, the chlorine ions and the hydroxy groups being provided at least in part by at least one chlorine derivative of an aliphatic acid or of a hydroxy-organic compound, or the chlorine ions being provided at least in part by hydrochloric acid or a chloride in acid solution and the hydroxy groups being provided at least in part by a hydroxy-organic acid or other hydroxy-organic substance, and if desired also in part by an inorganic acid containing hydroxy groups or a salt of such acid. Examples of chlorine derivatives of aliphatic acids or hydroxy-organic acids are mono-di-, and trichloracetic acid, mono-di- and tri-chlor-lactic acid, 2-chloro-1-hydroxy-butyric acid, 3-chloro-1-hydroxy-butyric acid. 1-chloro-2-hydroxy-isobutyric acid, and 1 - chloro - 2 - hydroxy - 1 methyl-succinic acid. A suitable chloride is aluminium chloride, suitable inorganic acids are phosphoric acid and suphuric acid, and suitable hydroxy organic acids are citric, tartaric, and lactic acids. Examples of other hydroxy organic compounds are glucose and dextrin. The metal surface may be cleaned before treatment by an alkaline solution, for example a 5 per cent. solution of sodium hydroxide. After etching the surface may be washed or rinsed with an inert solvent, examples of which are dioxane and ketones. Alternatively the etched surface may be washed with water. For plating by chemical displacement the etched surface should be washed thoroughly in an inert liquid, then finally given a time-controlled rinse in cold water. For nickel plating the bath may consist of a solution of nickel suphates, nickel chloride, ammonium citrate and a substance known under the Registered Trade Mark "Perminal Bx".
