708,447. Roller bearings. ROLLER BEARING CO. OF AMERICA. Sept. 11, 1951 [Sept, 15, 1950; Aug. 31, 1951], No. 21387/51. Class 12(1) A roller bearing comprises a race ring 1 having spaced side ribs 2, 3, cylindrical rollers 11 having symmetrical ends, and a cage 5 having rims which overlie and make a slip fit with the rims 2, 3, the rims and ribs each having a radial surface transverse to the axis of the bearing and the annulus of juncture between the rims and ribs lying in a zone having a width of not more than ten per cent of the diameter of a roller on either side of a pitch circle passing through the centres of the rollers. The juncture preferably' lies on the pitch circle. The inner surface of the cage 5 may be axially or circumferentially grooved as at 9 to form extruded roller retainers 10. The outer raceway may be cylindrical or axially curved as shown in Fig. 3. Similarly the inner raceway 14 may be axially curved. Alternatively the inner race may be dispensed with, and the rollers bear directly on a shaft or trunnion. The cage is preferably not more than one third the diameter of a roller in thickness.
