Abstract

707,729. Making axle-boxes. BRITISH TIMKEN, Ltd. Oct. 25, 1952, No. 26821/52. Class 83 (2) A channel-section horn-guide liner for an axle box is made by forming longitudinal grooves 6 in one surface of a flat plate and then bending the side portions of the plate along the grooves so that the latter provide corner clearances to facilitate the machining of the inner surfaces of the liner. The grooves are formed by hot or cold pressing, by grinding, or by machining and they may be of uniform width and depth throughout or they may have end portions 6' of progressively increasing depth and/or width towards their extremities. The end portions 8 of the flanges 5 may be tapered in thickness before bending by hot or cold forging. The flanges 5 may be bent at an angle of 90 degrees or more to the back plate 4. Holes 10 may be drilled or punched in the liner and the latter may be welded to the axle box through these holes.
