Abstract
1,064,536. Making composite strip material. CLEVITE CORPORATION. Sept. 6, 1965 [Sept. 17, 1964 (2)], No. 38035/65. Heading B3A. [Also in Division F2] A bearing comprises two equal parts each having a semi-cylindrical portion (10), Fig. 1 (not shown), the inner bearing surface of which has a layer (22), Fig. 2 (not shown), of strong high-load carrying bearing material, such as bronze, adhered thereto and may have the layer (22) provided with a thin layer (23) of white metal thereon; and at least one flange portion (11), to which is adhered a conformable layer (21) of white metal, for example, with or without a thin layer of bronze (19) between the layer (21) and the flange (11). Stripmaterial for the bearing is produced by applying a layer (22) bearing material to a length of steel strip, working the layer (22), Fig. 4 (not shown), so that it has a pre-determined thickness over the area of the strip which forms the bearing surface of the portion (10) and has a lesser thickness over the area (or areas) of the strip which forms the flange (or flanges). The layer (22) may be cast across the steel strips and be partly removed, by milling for example, at the flange-forming areas of the strip; may be sintered and rolled, may be bonded and rolled; and may be confined to the area of the strip which forms the bearing surface (10). White metal may be cast across the complete area of the machined strip so as to provide a thin layer over the layer (22) and a thicker layer over the flange area (or areas); and may be confined to the area of the strip which forms the flange (or flanges) (11). The strip is cut into blanks which are then roll-formed, for example, into. bearings.
