Abstract

A plain bearing comprises a metallic supporting layer and a continuous surface layer of poly-tetra-fluoro-ethylene mechanically bonded thereto by hot pressing the poly-tetra-fluoro-ethylene into recesses in the supporting layer. The recesses may be produced by phosphating, etching, shot-blasting, grooving or sintering. Alternatively, the supporting layer consists of wire gauze brazed on to a steel or other backing. The poly-tetra-fluoro-ethylene may be applied in the form of powder, tape or veneer, and the layer has a thickness of from 0.0003 to 0.005 inch.
