Abstract

Metal surfaces such as bearings are coated by hot-pressing thereon a mixture of a minor proportion of molybdenum di-sulphide and a major proportion of polytetrafluoro-ethylene or one of its partial decomposition or substitution products, a superpolyamide, a superpolyester, or polythene. A second layer of one of the organic polymers, with or without admixture with molybdenum disulphide may be applied before or after the application of heat and pressure. The metal, which may be steel, iron, copper, nickel, aluminium, magnesium, or silver, may be cleaned, e.g. with trichlorethylene, and abraded with emery, before coating. The pressure may be applied by a steel die, and, to prevent adhesion, the face of the mixture is covered with a layer of molybdenum sulphide before pressing. The mixture of polymer and molybdenum disulphide may be applied as a powder or may be performed by hot-pressing into a thin sheet which may have a removable or destructible support such as paper or regenerated cellulose. Such sheets may be hot-pressed on to the metal surface to be coated, and may form a bond between the metal surface and a powdered or sheet-like layer of organic polymer. The coating has a low coefficient of friction. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 695,195,[Group XXXIV].
