Abstract

A coating or bonding composition to be applied to metal and other surfaces consists of an aqueous solution containing a phosphate ion, preferably H3PO4, together with (1) at least one of the group: chromates, dichromates, chromic acid, or molybdates, and (2) at least one metal compound from the group: the oxides and hydroxides of Mg, Zn; Al(OH)3; LiO, Li2CO3; the o-phosphates of Mg, Zn, Al and Fe; ferric pyrophosphate. To 100 c.c. of phosphoric acid solution is added 5-30 g. of the component (1) and 2-30 g. of component (2). Component (1) includes magnesium, sodium or zinc chromate or dichromate, or chromic acid. The composition may be admixed with finely divided insoluble materials, e.g. powdered Al or Ag; refractory oxides, carbides and silicides, e.g. Al2O3, ZrO2, ZnO, silica, or silicates of Zn and Mg, boron nitride, molybdenum disilicide or dry lubricating powders, e.g. graphite, lead oxide and molybdenum sulphide. After application, the coating may be dried and cured at 400-600 DEG F. Substrates coated may be metals e.g. sheet steel, ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, plastics, fibres, ceramics, wood or papers. The substrate may be in the form of wire, sheet, or strip which when coated may be drawn or mechanically formed without disrupting the coating.
