Abstract

Very thin (10-4 to 10-6m.) and hard wearing friction linings are applied to brake shoes or clutch plates. Powder mixtures of various components are coated by electrostatic methods on to the supporting substrate. Bonding to the substrate is achieved by the application of head and both the coating and bonding may be performed as a continuous process and almost simultaneously, thus reducing production costs. The lining materials envisaged have a substantial metallic content and in order to allow the electrostatic coating method to be used, the metal particles are either coated with an insulating material which is voltatilised or forms an additional component of the lining during the heat treatment, or inorganic metallic compounds are used which are reduced to the metallic form during heat treatment.
