Abstract
565,741. Making propellers. BURNETT, J. W., and WILLIAMS, T. L. May 20, 1943, No. 8044. [Class 83 (ii)] A propeller-hub of the kind described in Specification 546,359 is made from two flat plates of uniform thickness by (a) forging with or without cutting to produce a blank 13, Fig. 1; (b) forging to produce varying thickness as shown in Fig. 2 ; (c) stamping, with or without bending, in dies to produce the form shown in Fig. 3 ; (d) machining the faces 16 of the two halves to mate ; (e) machining, as necessary, to allow the halves to be held together by a jig ; (f) welding while so held ; and (g) final machining. The step (b) may be deferred until after step (c) or after step (f), the original plates, in this case, being thinner and the parts 10, 11, 12 being thickened by upsetting, rolling or forging. The original plates may be made by forging billets. The forging may be done hot or cold.
