Abstract
Cellulose xanthate is dissolved in the undialysed steeping liquor, containing hemicelluloses, resulting from the production of alkali cellulose by steeping cellulose in aqueous caustic soda solutions. The steeping liquor is treated to remove suspended solid constituents, e.g. by sedimentation or centrifuging. In an example cellulose is alkalized with caustic soda and the resulting alkali cellulose is pressed to obtain the steeping liquor. Part of this is used, together with fresh caustic soda and water, for alkalizing fresh cellulose. The remainder is clarified by settling and, after its caustic soda content has been adjusted to about 5 per cent., is used for dissolving cellulose xanthate.
