Abstract

682,398. Extracting pectin. SUPERIOR SUGAR REFINING CO. Nov. 2, 1949 [July 14, 1949], No. 28105/49. Class 121. In extracting pectin, sugar-free beet pulp is treated in a vessel 2 with a solvent, preferably an alcohol-benzene mixture, to remove waxes and gums, then digested with an aqueous liquid in a vessel 11 and the pectin solution is separated from the fibres, e.g. in a centrifuge 19, and pectin is precipitated from it in a vessel 34, e.g. by adding an alcohol. The precipitate may be isolated, washed and dried, e.g. in the centrifuge 19, and may then be powdered. The pulp may be digested first with a dilute alkali at 65‹ to 80‹ F. and then with a dilute acid at 180‹ to 190‹ F. Alternatively, a slurry of dewaxed pulp, having a pH between 8.0 and 8.5, may be agitated at room temperature, then acidified to pH 3.5 to 4.0 and digested at 180‹ to 190‹ F. The pectin solution may be concentrated at a temperature below 190‹ F., e.g. in a vacuum evaporator 24, the addition to the concentrate of twice its volume of alcohol then being sufficient to effect precipitation of pectin.
