Abstract

704,980. Spark gaps. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. March 13, 1952 [March 15, 1951], No. 6292/51 Class 39(1) A spark gap for use in measuring the output voltages of magnetos and other sources of recurrent high voltage impulses comprises two main electrodes presenting between them a main open air gap and two auxiliary electrodes presenting between them an auxiliary open air gap at least one of said main electrodes being adjustable away from and towards the other, and said electrodes being so disposed that the auxiliary air gap is located to one side of the main air gap and symmetrically thereof when the main electrodes are close together. The arrangement shown comprises a fixed live electrode 11 and an earthed electrode 12 adjustable axially as indicated by the arrows. Two auxiliary electrodes 14 and 15 are supported by, or may be mounted in, a body 13 of high specific inductive capacity material in a position such that the auxiliary gap is substantially in line with the main gap when the main gap electrodes are close together. Electrode 14 is connected directly to the live main electrode 11 and electrode 15 is connected to earth through a high resistance 17, so that the same source of potential supplies both gaps. Alternatively, the auxiliary electrodes may be connected to a separate source which may supply an impulsive voltage similar to and in synchronism with that applied to the main electrodes or alternatively may supply a unidirectional voltage of sufficient magnitude to initiate and maintain a steady discharge across the auxiliary gap. Of the auxiliary and main gap electrodes at least one auxiliary electrode may be made of radio active material whereby the auxiliary and if desired the main air gap as well is in some degree self-ionizing, in which case the body 13 may be omitted.
