Abstract
861,740. Spark gaps. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 12, 1958 [Oct. 10, 1957], No. 31730/57. Class 39(1). A high voltage circuit for a spark gap switch includes a first main electrode 1 connected to a high voltage source, a second main electrode 3 connected to a low voltage (or earth) source, and an auxiliary electrode 12 which may be in the form of an annular ring or two parallel cylinders located adjacent the end 4 of the electrode 3, together with means for applying a voltage pulse to the electrode 12 of such polarity as to increase the voltage gradient in the vicinity of the end 4 of an electrode 3 when the high voltage exists between them in order to cause voltage breakdown. The relative disposition of the cylinders may be made adjustable to obtain the position of maximum sensitivity of operation. The pulse may have a value of 10% of the value of the voltage difference between the main electrodes.
