An apparatus for electrostatically charging both sides of a photo-conductively coated sheet 15 has charging electrodes 5, 5<SP>1</SP>, and auxiliary electrodes 6, 6<SP>1</SP>. The electrodes 5, 6<SP>1</SP> are connected to a positive high voltage supply 7, while electrodes 5<SP>1</SP>, 6 are connected to a negative high voltage supply. Variable resistances 14, 14<SP>1</SP> permit adjustment of the voltages at the auxiliary electrodes.
