Abstract
570,043. Piezo-electric crystals. BRUSH DEVELOPMENT CO. Jan. 8, 1943, No. 429. Convention date, Jan. 8, 1942. [Class 40 (v)] To reduce surface leakage between the electrodes of a piezo-electric signal generator, a guard electrode situated so as to intercept the leakage path is maintained at the same instantaneous potential as one of the electrodes. In Fig. 1 a piezo-electric generator 11 has electrodes 12, 13 and a guard ring electrode 21 intercepting the surface leakage path between electrodes 12, 13. Electrodes 12, 13 are connected to output terminals 14, 15 leakage between which is reduced by the provision of a second guard electrode 18 connected to guard electrode 21. The output terminals 14, 15 are connected as shown to the input of a high impedance amplifier in the form of a valve 17 arranged as a cathode follower and' the signal output is taken at 29, 30 across resistance 28. Guards 18 and 21 are connected to the cathode end of resistance 28 and are maintained at substantially the instantaneous potential of electrode 12. The leakage between the guard and the other electrode is supplied by the output of the amplifier 17 and does not form a load on the element 11. Modifications are described showing the provision of guard electrodes for series and parallel connected to plate elements connected to a single amplifier or to a push-pull pair.
