Abstract

704,392. Discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 7,1951 [March 30, 1950], No. 5537/51. Class 39(1) [Also in Group XL(b)] Apparatus for accelerating charged particles comprises a toroidal vessel of dielectric material disposed within a time-varying magnetic field and adapted to enclose an orbital path along which charged particles may be accelerated, and a resonator for supplying a high frequency electric field to accelerate the particles including an inner conductor formed of conductive strips 2 attached to the outer periphery of the toroidal vessel and a longitudinally sectionalized outer conductor supported by and enclosing a portion of the toroidal vessel, the outer conductor comprising sections of insulating material 6 having conducting strips 10 attached along their inner surfaces; the strips 10 in conjunction with the strips 2 form a quarter wave line at the operating frequency, and the strip construction reduces eddy currents induced by the magnetic field. As shown in Fig. 2 these may be two insulating sections 6 bolted together and they may taper at their ends, Fig. 1, to bring the strips 10 and 2 into contact. There is a gap 3 in the strips 2 to form an accelerating gap for the particles; on either side of the gap the strips 2 are short-circuited by peripheral loops 4, 5. The strips 10 may also be short-circuited opposite the gap 3 to reduce eddy currents. High frequency energy is fed to the strips 2 from a coaxial line terminating in a disc 12<SP>1</SP> which is pressed by a spring into contact with one of the strips 2. A probe 28 connected to a coaxial line may be used to measure the excitation of the :esonator. Specifications 622,148 and 703,995 are referred to.
