599,529. Dielectric heating. WEST INGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Sept. 26, 1945, No. 24965. Convention date, Sept. 28, 1944. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XL] A high-frequency dielectric heating apparatus energized at a frequency giving rise to standing voltage wave patterns on the electrodes 6, 10, comprises a generator 1 connected to one end of the electrodes by a transmission line 4, 8 and a resonant chamber 22 connected to the other end of the electrodes by a transmission line 16. The resonant chamber comprises an outer closed cylinder 20 containing an inner concentric closed cylinder 30 with an eccentrically mounted disc 38 driven by an electric motor 34. Rotation of the disc 38 causes variations of capacity within the chamber to vary the tuning either side of the resonant frequency thus causing the standing voltage wave pattern to migrate regularly over the heating electrodes. The variations of capacity caused by the movement of disc 38 are such that the standing wave pattern is shifted sufficiently to cause the maximum and minimum valves of voltage to appear temporarily at every point of the electrodes, and thus ensure uniform heating of the dielectric material.
