Abstract

699,426. Automatic control systems. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. June 5, 1951 [June 16, 1950], No. 13339/51. Class 38 (iv). [Also in Group XL (a)] The main A.C. windings 15 in a betatronstarted synchrotron (see Group XL (a)) in which a magnetic core periodically saturates, are continually maintained in resonance during normal operation by means of an induction disc type of reactive volt-ampere meter having a voltage winding 41 connected in series with a phaseshifting capacitor 41<SP>1</SP> across the output of an induction regulator 21. This regulator supplies the main windings 15. The meter also has a current winding 42 energized through a current transformer 43 coupled to the lead to the windings 15. When reactive current flows through the windings 15, the induction disc 44 rotates in a direction depending on whether the current is inductively or capacitively reactive, and operates a switch 45 to cause the motor 341 of the induction regulator 21 to rotate in a direction to decrease the output voltage of the regulator for an inductively reactive current flow in the windings 15, and conversely for a capacitively reactive current.
