Abstract

1,098,602. Superconducting magnets. SIEMENS - SCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. June 3, 1965 [June 19, 1964], No. 23822/65. Heading H1K. A superconducting magnetic coil with at least one parallel connected resistor is excited from a unidirectional source which is varied to provide a constant magnetizing voltage across the ends of the coil; provision may be made to reduce this voltage momentarily when flux jumping is likely to occur or as critical current is approached. Normally, the source voltage needs to be steadily increased to provide for increasing voltage drop in the external circuit as the coil current increases; predetermined programming may be utilized to effect short period reductions in source voltage to deal with sudden changes known to occur at particular current values in the particular coil employed, or the source voltage may be varied by a control signal derived from probes connected to the superconducting coil. In one embodiment, control is effected by a programmed motor drive varying an induction regulator (slowly) and a stepped transformer, the regulator and transformer each being associated with a rectifier, and the two rectifiers being connected in series; in another embodiment the applied voltage is compared with a predetermined master voltage and a controller or variable transistor is used to bring the applied voltage to the desired level. In another embodiment, the coil voltages across each half of the coil are compared in a differential transformer and any resulting signal is used for control or disconnection of the voltage source.
