Abstract
A nozzle for spinning rayon or cellulose wool is formed of tantalum containing tantalum carbide. The carbide may form a surface layer or may be dispersed throughout the body of the nozzle. In making the nozzle, a workpiece of tantalum may be heated to 700-1,500 DEG C. under a pressure less than 1 mm. of mercury in the presence of a gaseous compound of carbon with one or more of the elements hydrogen, nitrogen, or oxygen, e.g. methane or carbon monoxide. The nozzle, after carburization, may be heat-treated to produce a uniform dispersion of the carbide throughout the body of the nozzle.ALSO:A spinning nozzle for spinning rayon or cellulose wool is formed of tantalum and has an active surface containing tantalum carbide. The carbide may form a surface layer or may be dispersed throughout the body of the nozzle. A workpiece of tantalum may be heated to 700 DEG -1500 DEG C. under a pressure less than 1m.m. of mercury in the presence of a gaseous compound of carbon with one or more of the elements hydrogen, nitrogen, or oxygen. The carbon compound may be methane or carbon monoxide. The nozzle, after carburization, may be heat treated to produce a uniform dispersion of the carbide throughout the body of the nozzle.
