Abstract
575,696. Waterproofing. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). May 15. 1944, No. 9320. [Class 140] A waterproofing composition comprises as the essential ingredient a mixture of from 2.8 to 99.2 per cent. by weight of trimethyl silicon chloride and from 97.2 to 0.8 per cent by weight silicon tetrachloride. Methyl silicon dichloride and methyl silicon trichloride may also be present. Vapours of the azeotropic mixture may be used and the treated body contacted with gaseous ammonia. The mixture may be distilled into a treating chamber containing the bodies to be treated, e.g., under reduced pressure, or a stream of air or inert gas may be bubbled through the liquid and led into the chamber. A mixture containing from 34.5 to 44 per cent. trimethyl silicon chloride and from 65.5 to 56 per cent. silicon tetrachloride is preferred. Bodies that may be waterproofed are metals. glass, ceramic and porcelain bodies, mica, asbestos, cellulosic materials such as wood and regenerated cellulose, paper, cotton, linen, silk, wool. synthetic linear polyamides, and porous silica and may be in fibre, fabric, or sheet form. A compound may be formed between the silicon compounds and the material of the body treated. The compounds may be used in the liquid form or may be dissolved in an inert solvent, e.g., ethers, hydrocarbons, and chlorinated hydrocarbons.
