Abstract
Gases containing nitrogen peroxide and nitric oxide are rendered innocuous by mixing the gases with a flame. The gases may be blown or sucked laterally into the flame so that turbulent flow results, or may be introduced with fuel, and the gases are preferably introduced into the reducing portion of the flame. The treatment may be carried out in a furnace chamber lined with heat-resisting material, e.g. charmotte brick. Between 2,000 and 3,000 kg./cals. should be developed by the flame per kg. of nitrogen peroxide.
