Abstract

In a method of processing whiteheart malleable iron from white cast iron by heating it to a temperature above 85 DEG C. and below the melting point of iron, the white cast iron is heated in a substantially gas-tight furnace wherein the initial atmosphere of air is replaced during the heat-treatment, continuously or intermittently, by either water vapour or carbon dioxide or a mixture of both, the rate of replacement being so selected as to maintain an actively carburizing atmosphere in the furnace without any or excessive oxidation. The gaseous medium may pass through a circuit external to the furnace the addition of water and/or carbon dioxide being made before or simultaneously with its entry into the furnace or the medium may circulate only within the furnace the addition being made directly, thereto, in either case an amount of medium corresponding to the addition is withdrawn. The ratio of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide is preferably maintained at 0.4. Specification 585,921 is referred to.
