Abstract
572,471. Gas-purifying materials and processes. BOOTH, N., and JOLLEY, L. J. July 9, 1941, No. 8667. [Class 55 (ii)] The organic sulphur content of a gas containing hydrogen, such as coal gas or water gas, is reduced by passing the gas through a tube heated to 450‹ C. or over, and containing iron deposited on a support by the thermal decomposition of iron carbonyl, and then absorbing the hydrogen sulphide formed. The iron is re-activated by heating first in an oxidising gas such as air, and then in a reducing gas such as hydrogen, water gas, or coal gas, at a temperature of 450‹ C. or over. The gas may first be treated to remove a substantial proportion of its organic sulphur by treatment with gas oil or absorbent carbon.
