Abstract
A process of operating converter plants, either Bessemer or surface blowing, comprises adding oxygen to the waste carbon monoxide containing gases in the theoretical amount required to burn the carbon monoxide. The gases may be treated in the hot condition to convert all the iron compounds present to ferric oxide or they may be cooled and the carbon monoxide burned without oxidation of the iron compounds. The combustion may take place in a gas cleaning plant, e.g. a wet cleaning plant, or before the gases are supplied to a cleaning plant. The amount of oxygen added is controlled in accordance with the amount of carbon monoxide in the waste gas. It is stated that the ferric oxide produced is more easily wetted than the iron compounds present in the waste gases and therefore more easily removed in a wet cleaning plant.
