702,878. Ordnance. ROSS, G. A. CLUNIES-, and TURNER, A. R. KING-. June 5, 1952 [June 19, 1951], No. 14272/52. Class 92(2) A gun barrel 1 is cooled by a blast of compressed air from an air chest 15 which receives its supply of air from a rotary blower 11, the latter being driven by a turbine 6 which is rotated by gases tapped from the barrel when a projectile is fired. In the form shown a turbo-blower unit 5 is mounted near the barrel and includes inlet and outlet ports 9, 10, for the tapped gases, and an inlet 13 for the air to be compressed. When a shot is fired the blower is rotated by the shaft 8 connecting it with the turbine, and air entering the port 13 passes into the blower chamber 12 and thence via a non- return valve to the chest 15. The outlet from a tube 17 extending from the chest is temporarily closed by the spent case 4 of the round which has been fired, but when this is withdrawn the air passes through the barrel to perform a cooling and scavenging action. A single unit may be used to cool a multiple barrel gun or gun assembly.
