Abstract
115,512. Beardmore & Co., W., and Bremberg, A. May 24, 1917. Recoil apparatus.-Relates to the type of apparatus in which a spring A arranged between a piston C on the gun D and the gun cradle B is freely compressed during recoil, an air dash-pot being employed to control the run out. The invention consists in the special means for controlling air leakage in the dash-pot to suit the angle of elevation of the gun. In the form shown, the air imprisoned in the forward end of the cylinder B passes through ports G, L to a supplementary inclined cylinder K having an outlet M controlled by a ball or other gravity-moved valve P and a secondary constant aperture R. At high angles of elevation, the ball occupies the closed end of the cylinder K, but, as the elevation is reduced, the ball, during the run out, moves nearer and nearer to the port M so as more and more to obstruct the escape of air through this port. At minimum elevation when the ball closes the port M, escape of air takes place only through the port R. Two or more cylinders K with their axes inclined at different angles may be provided.
