DEVICE ron snoormo GRENADES.
I Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 15, 1919.
I Application filed December 8, 1917. Serial No. 206,170.
I To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be' it known that I, NIELS WALTERSEN Aasnn, asubject of the King of N orway, residing at Christiania, in the Kingdom of Norway, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Devices for Shooting Grenades; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apper- 'tains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, .and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a device for V shooting grenades of the kind which consists of a grenade throwing tube fixed to an ordinary rifle and connected with its back end by means of a channel to the bore of the rifle.
According to the present invention the channel connecting the back end of the grenade throwing tube with the bore of the rifle is provided with an adjusting cock or valve by means of which the cross section of the channel may be throttled or the channel completely closed.
. The invention also comprises a number of improvements in devrces of the kind above referred to which will be more particularly described in the following specification.
On the drawing:
I Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a form of the invention mounted on a rifle.
- Fig. 2 is a section on the line II-II of Fig.1and
Fig; 3 is a longitudinal sectionof a modified form of the invention.
'The. grenade throwing apparatus consists of a cylinder 1 which is fastened in a known manner to the rifle barrel and communicates with the bore -of the same 'by means of a channel 2.
"In order to regulate the cross section of this channel and thereby adjust the range -ofthe grenade thrower the same according V to the present invention is provided with a throttle valve consisting of a screw 3 by means of which the channel 2 may be wholly or partly closed. When the channel is completely closed'the rifle may be used in the ordinary manner without the grenade shooter causing any noticeable inconvenience.
.In order to spread the explosion gases over the-back end surface of the grenade a deflecting piece 4 is mounted in" front of the channel opening, said deflecting piece having a wedge shaped cross section as seen on Fig. 2.
thus serving also to tighten the grenade in the throwing tube. The guiding sleeve is provided with an annular groove 6 which serves to prevent the sticking of the grenade in the tube 1.
As illustrated on Fig. '3 the channel 2 may be provided with a nonreturn valve 7 with the object of preventing the escape of pressure gas from tube 1 after the bullet has passed out of the rifle barrel. Said nonreturn valve 7 may consist of a ball valve as indicated on the drawing or of any other known and suitable form of valve.
I claim:
1. Grenade throwing device for rifles comprising a grenade throwing tube, a channel connecting the back end of said grenade throwing tube with the bore of the rifle and means for throttling or closing the said channel in order to regulate the range of the grenade throwing device.
2. Grenade throwing device for rifles comprising a grenade throwing tube, a channel connecting the back end of said grenade throwing tube with the bore of the rifle, means for throttling or closing the said channel in order to regulate the range of the grenade throwing device and a nonreturn valve in the channel for preventing the escape of gas into the rifle bore after the .bullet has passed out of the same.
3. Grenade throwing device for rifles com V prising a grenade throwing tube, a channel throwing tube with thebore of the rifle;
in the back end of said tube for distributing the pressure evenly over the back end of the grenade. a v f 5. Grenade throwing device for rifles con connecting the back endof said grenade throwing tube with the bore of therifle and of pressure gas behind the grenade,
