9579. Laird, C. W., [Menteyne, P. M.]. April 17. Breech actions, sliding breech-block. - Relates to gas - operated guns having a short - stroke piston and a relatively long tube or passage communicating from the barrel to the gas cylinder, and consists in so positioning the gas vent A<2>, connecting the forward end of this passage G with the barrel, that the bullet will have left the barrel before the breech-block is completely unlocked. The air, or mixed air and powder gases, contained in the tube G prevents the discharge gases from coming into actual contact with the piston F'. The piston imparts sufficient energy to the breech-operating slide E to actuate the breech action completely.
