Abstract

128,354. Fairfax, H. W. Gabbett-. Dec. 9, 1918. Machine guns.- Relates to gas-operated guns, and consists in the provision between the gas piston and the breech - operating mechanism of a column of air, which is compressed by the powder gases and, after the compression is complete, is allowed to expand to open the breech. In the construction shown, the gas piston D compresses air in a cylinder C, the compressed air afterwards operating a piston L which is connected to the bolt-actuating slide M. The piston L is held by a catch V until the piston D reaches its rearward position, and the piston D is retained by the same catch until the piston L returns. The piston D has a forward extension E formed with ports H, D<3>. When the piston L is in its rear position, air escapes through an aperture N, and when the piston D returns to its forwanl position, air enters the cylinder C through an aperture C<2>.
