Abstract

198,701. Hazelton, G. Oct. 11, 1917. Machine guns. - The rate of fire of machine guns is increased by providing on the muzzle a piston 2 engaging a cylinder 3 fixed to the gun casing, the piston being acted upon by the gases which are trapped in the space 6 when the projectile is traversing the aperture 5, but which afterwards escape through apertures 7 uncovered by the piston. The rearward movement of the piston and barrel compresses an auxiliary spring 8 which reacts to permit a quick return of the barrel. The spring 8 may be replaced by a spring 9 of the form shown in Fig. 3 which occupies less space when compressed. The leverage of the main spring 13 is increased, as the lock approaches its rearward position, by the engagement of a cam 11 on the fuzee-arm 10 with the linkage 12 connecting the fuzee-arm with the main spring.
