Abstract
274,031. Destree, J. July 10, 1926, [Convention date]. Breech actions, sliding breech-block.-The movement of the piston, in a gasoperated gun of the kind in which the piston compresses a spring or springs which react to operate the breech, is damped before the piston reaches the end of its strode by the action of gases admitted to act on the other face of the piston. As shown in Fig. 1, the breech is operated by a spring 5 compressed by a piston 4 which is driven forwards by gases admitted to the cylinder 3 through a large port 2 in the barrel 1. In front of the port 2 is another port 12 through which, after a short interval of time, gases pass to the front portion of the cylinder to damp the movement of the piston. In a modification, Fig. 2, there is only one port 2 and the cylinder is formed with an enlarged portion 14 so that, after a short movement of the piston 4, gases can pass to the other side of the piston to damp its movement. The port 2 may be formed in a muzzle extension of larger bore than that of the barrel.
