Abstract
338,888. Armamenti Militari Soc. Anon. June 6, 1929, [Convention date]. Breech actions, sliding breech-block.-Relates to a pneumatic control device for automatic firearms of the type in which the breech-bolt compresses air to damp the recoil movement, and consists in the provision of means for annulling the damping effect at the beginning and end of both the recoil and return strokes of the breechbolt. In the construction shown, the breech chamber 1 is closed at the rear end by a cap 4. A rod 9 integral with the breech-bolt 3 extends through the cap 4 and has grooves 11, 12 by means of which the air in the chamber is put in communication with the atmosphere at each end of its travel. During the opening movement of the breech-bolt, the air in the chamber 1 remains at atmospheric pressure until the groove 11 passes out of the cylinder. The air is then compressed until, near the end of the stroke, the chamber is again opened to atmospheric pressure through the groove 12. The return movement is effected by a spring 6 and is retarded by the reduction of pressure which takes place in the chamber. In a modification, the rod 9 is replaced by a spring-controlled valve in the cap 4, which valve is actuated by the recoiling breechbolt, and an air escape hole is also provided in the side of the chamber slightly to the rear of the breech-bolt when in its foremost position. In a further modification, a hole is provided in the side of the chamber and the breech-bolt has an axial hole entering it from the rear with a lateral forward outlet which comes opposite the hole in the breech chamber near the end of the recoil movement. An additional adjustable port may be provided in the wall of the breech chamber or in the cap 4, by means of which the braking effect of the air can be regulated to produce various firing speeds. Automatic firing is effected at the end of the closing movement by the tail of a striker pivoted in the breech-bolt contacting with a stop in the wall of the breech chamber.
