Abstract

135,882. Dawson, Sir A. T., and Buckham, Sir G. T. Sept. 4, 1918. Recoil apparatus for high-angle guns. Consists in means for automaticallyregulating the recoil and run-out, so that the effect of the weight of the recoiling parts is compensated for, and an approximately constant length of recoil is obtained at all elevations. This is effected by the provision of a conduit between the ends of the recoil cylinder, and of another communicating with a recess in which a retarding-ram works, there being a valve in each conduit automatically adjusted according to elevations. In the construction shown in side elevation in Fig. 1, and in vertical section in Fig. 2, as seen from the right-hand side of the gun, the non-recoiling brake cylinder A is provided with the conduit A<2> connecting the two ends of the cylinder. A rotary cock a<2> arranged in the conduit A<2> is connected by an external arm a<3> and link A<3> to a fixed part of the carriage at a point some distance from the trunnion axis, so that as the gun is elevated, the cock is rotated and progressively closes the conduit A<2>, thereby setting up a greater resistance to the flow of liquid. The conduit A<2> is additional to the usual valve-key arrangement a, A<1>. The resistance to the run-out is simultaneously controlled, and reduced with the increase in elevation, by a second rotary cock b<2> located in the passage B<2> through the fixed retarding-ram B. This cock is also actuated by the link A', in a similar manner to the cock a', by the parallel-motion links shown in Fig. 1. The invention is also described as applied to recoil apparatus of the recoiling-cylinder type.
