Abstract

Apparatus for the cavitation treatment of liquids comprises a vessel 2 containing a rapidly-revolving rotor 4 provided on its circumference with a ring of separated nozzles 32 through which liquid is sprayed in separate jets against a circumferential stator 6 having a plurality of centrifugal passageways, and is characterised in that the stator comprises a plurality of blades arranged so that each of the blades is slidingly contacted on only one side by the jets, and that the plane of said side is substantially vertical to the plane of rotation of the rotor and at an angle to the direction <PICT:0702811/III/1> of impact of the jets. The blades are caused to vibrate by the impingement of the jets, and the liquid flows as a film over the surface of the blades and is dissipated into small particles; the liquid becomes charged with the gas present between the rotor and the stator. The effect may be intensified by roughening the surface of the blades, e.g. by sand-blasting. Liquid is continuously sucked from the vessel 2 through tube 5, connected to the rotor and provided with a stirrer 7, and returned to the vessel. Pump 8 circulates liquid through pipe 10, filter 21, pipe 10a, mixer 13, and nozzle 12, back to the vessel 2; nozzle 12 also serves for starting the circulation through the rotor. Fresh components are introduced at 22, 23, 24, and the product is removed at 14, passing through a settling tank 16 from which separated fractions may be returned to the main circuit at 31. The rotor may be provided internally with rows of pins and staggered plates to prevent centrifugal separation of the components; alternatively a narow tapering duct may lead to each nozzle. Emulsification and dispersion may be effected and reactions between liquids, liquids and gases, and liquids and solids (e.g. catalysts) may be initiated.
