1,166,094. Vacuum apparatus; prevention of deposits in outlet conduits. KARL FISCHER APPARATE-U ROHRLEITUNGSBAU and CHATILLOW SOC. ANON. ITALIANA PER LE FIBRE. TESSILI ARTIFICIALI S.p.A. 26 Oct., 1966 [11 Nov., 1965], No. 48129/66. Headings B1B and B1X. Vapours with solid particles in suspension, liberated during a vacuum process in vessel 1, are drawn through pipe 3 into a spray condenser 4 which is attached to jet pump 5, both of which are operated by a non-aqueous solvent which dissolves and washes away any deposits of solid matter which would otherwise form on the inner walls of the apparatus. The head 6 of condenser 5 is provided with a heating jacket 7; and with a rotating worm 8a. In order to carry out the polymerization of bis-(2-hydroxyethyl)-terephthalate, it is spread as a thin layer on the inner wall of vessel 1, which is heated by a jacket. Ethylene glycol vapour is liberated, and is drawn through pipe 3 into spray condenser 4 which is supplied through nozzles 12 and 13 with liquid ethylene glycol. Jet pump 5 is surrounded by heating jacket 16, and is supplied with glycol vapour through nozzle 18. The vapours leaving the jet pump enter spray condenser 19 which is supplied with liquid glycol through nozzle 20. The lower openings 11 and 22 of condensers 4 and 19, respectively, are connected to barometric tubes (not shown). A conventional steam-jet vacuum pump, supplied with steam and warm water, may be used to withdraw inert gases from condenser 19 through outlet 21. An extensive list of organic solvents, which may be utilized in the apparatus, is given.
