Abstract

Vapours to be condensed flow through duct 4a into a rotary casing 2 having a frustoconical side-wall 2a which surrounds an axial tube 10 having apertures 13 through which cooling liquid is sprayed into direct contact with the vapours in the rotating casing. The mixture of condensate and cooling liquid flows down the inner surface of wall 2a into channel 7 where it is formed by centrifugal force into an annular plug which has a greater "radial depth" above disc 3 than below, as shown by broken lines on Fig. 1. Excess liquid is discharged into stationary trough 8 which is drained by pipe 9 into a storage tank. Non- condensable gases are withdrawn from the condenser through pipe 16 by means of jet extractor 14, the jet 19 (Fig. 2) of which is supplied with liquid through a hose 15 connected to the lower end of axial tube 10. The space within channel 7 is divided into twelve radial channels by vertical webs 6. If vapours of benzene or of acetone are to be condensed, then the cooling liquid is preferably benzene or acetone, respectively.
